Laverne Foth

LaVerne A. Foth, 87, of Cedar Falls, passed away of natural causes on Saturday, October 27, 2007 at the Windhaven Center in Cedar Falls, IA. LaVerne was born on February 10, 1920, in Bancroft, IA, the daughter of George & Lena Wolf. She married Robert Foth on October 20, 1943, in the Immaculate Conception Church in Provo, Utah. LaVerne was a wonderful mother first and foremost. She loved to cook and sew, both important when you're raising five boys. She cooked many a dinner for her son's friends and family, and baked pies, brownies and cookies for their after-school functions. She also made numerous alterations to her sons' jeans, pants, jackets and shirts so everything fit just right. Survivors include her five sons and their spouses: Jim & Joyce of Ankeny, IA; John & Caroline of Fountain Valley, CA; Dennis & Noi of Panama City, FL; Richard & Stacey of Erie, CO; and Donald & Kim of Cedar Falls, along with 11 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. She is also survived by four sisters and one brother: Louise Robbins of Alameda, CA; Joan LaHue of Alameda, CA; Elaine Bonetto of Roanoke, IL; Jean Smith of Marshalltown, IA and George (Sonny) Wolf of Bancroft, IA. Outside of the home, LaVerne was a professional seamstress, employed for many years by White Way Cleaners in Osage, IA. After LaVerne and Robert moved to Cedar Falls in 1973, LaVerne worked out of her home doing sewing and tailoring, mostly for her friends and family. LaVerne was preceded in death by Robert, her husband of 55 years, her parents George and Lena and three brothers Joseph, Virgil and Homer. LaVerne was very active in and exercised regularly at the Cedar Falls Community Center. She was also a counselor for many years for women that had undergone surgery for breast cancer, something she survived for over thirty years. Her greatest enjoyment was visiting with people and telling them about her family. Her sons used to revel when she told everyone about them and how good they were growing up, obviously forgetting about the mischief all boys get into. Another passion of hers was at Christmas time when she would spend weeks preparing packages of cookies, fruitcake, and other treats for her sons and their families. LaVerne will be missed by all that knew her and were touched by her. But, we know that she will be happy she has joined Robert and the two of them can watch over their family together once again. Friends may call from 4 to 6 PM Sunday at Richardson Funeral Home in Cedar Falls and also one hour prior to the services at the church. Mass of Christian Burial will be 1:00 PM Monday at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Cedar Falls with internment at Fairview Cemetery in Cedar Falls. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be directed to: St. Patrick Catholic Church in Cedar Falls, or Windhaven Center c/o Western Home Communities or Cedar Valley Hospice.
