Maynard Prashak

Maynard Cleon Prashak, 92, passed away at Windsor Nursing and Rehab Center, Cedar Falls, Iowa, on Sunday, June 9, 2013. Maynard was born March 18, 1921 in Guernsey, Iowa to Joseph and Francis (Sheda) Prashak. Maynard was the youngest of eight siblings. He graduated from Guernsey High School in 1938, and then entered into the United States Army at Fort Jackson in Charleston, South Carolina. Maynard married Darlene May Stecher in 1949 in Kellogg, Iowa at the Christian Church. They were soon blessed with a son and daughter. They began their life together farming on their family farm in Guernsey, Iowa. Maynard and Darlene moved their family to Coralville, Iowa where Maynard worked at Animal Health for FS Service. Shortly after, he worked as the assistant manager at the Ramada Inn and then moved to the Hawkeye Lodge where he became manager. Maynard and Darlene discovered their love for the motel business and purchased the Vagabond Motel and moved to Cedar Falls in March 1969. Maynard and Darlene enjoyed 65 years of marriage. With their love of the warm weather, they purchased a second home in Mesa, Arizona where they wintered for 25 years. Together, they were avid sports fans and rarely missed a University of Iowa and University of Northern Iowa basketball and football game or their children's and grandchildren's activities. Maynard and Darlene shared a love of ballroom dancing, playing cards with good friends and enjoyed eating out at restaurants. Maynard always made time to tell a good joke to his friends and family and loved spending time with their great-grandchildren. Maynard is survived by his wife, Darlene; two children, Marshall (Terry) Prashak of Muscatine, IA, and Pamela (Dennis) Huling of Forest City, IA; four grandchildren, Audra (Jeff) McGeary of Wellington, FL, Barbara (John) Haney of Blooming Prairie, MN, Mitch (Jenny) Prashak of Ankeny, IA, and Randy (Brandy) Huling of Sheffield, IA; six great-grandchildren, Eleana Horta and Colin McGeary, Keanna, Keira, Keifer and Kemlin Huling. He is preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Joseph (Hilda) Prashak, and six sisters, Mayme (Henry) Cordes, Francis (Roy) Provin, Anna (Carl) Koehn, Stella (Cecil) Lyman, Blanche (Ben) McManigal, and Elsie (Harold) Wiedow. Family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Richardson Funeral Service, 615 Main Street in Cedar Falls. Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church, 718 Clay Street, Cedar Falls, with interment in the Guernsey Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to First United Methodist Church, Cedar Falls.
