Sheryl Bewyer

CEDAR FALLS — Sheryl Diane Bewyer, 80, died peacefully Thursday, November 27, 2025, with her loving family by her side at the Deery Suites in the Western Home Communities. Sheryl was born January 7, 1945, in Monona, Iowa. She was the daughter of Howard William and Laverne B. Kaiser Belden. On August 7, 1966, she was united in marriage to David Bewyer in Spirit Lake, Iowa. She graduated from Spirit Lake High School in 1963 and went on to receive her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Northern Iowa in 1967, and her Master of Arts degree from Truman State University in 1970. As a teacher with the Cedar Falls Community Schools for 34 years, not only was she a proud educator, but even more so of her students. She assisted in the development of the curriculum for the Talented and Gifted program. She took tremendous pride with her involvement as coach of the Future Problem Solving program, and led many FPS teams to multiple state, national and international competitions. She retired in 2012. An avid volunteer in the community, Sheryl offered her time to multiple organizations. She served the American Association of University Women for over 50 years, including as Publications Director. She also served with the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Junior League as an organizer of the Charity Ball, and its Buttercups and Brandy cookbook, Camp Fire fundraiser, Southdale Citizen newsletter editor, National T.T.T. Society, and was a lifetime member of the National Education Association. In addition, she was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls, serving as treasurer for over 20 years. In appreciation of her commitments, she was presented the Cedar Falls Volunteer Recognition Award for Outstanding Community Services. She and David traveled extensively, exploring much of the world together, including 88 countries within all 7 continents. She cherished her Okoboji roots, and spending summer vacations there, along with anything Coca-Cola, The Beach Boys, Elvis, dancing, exercising, reading, sewing projects, ice cream, and champagne. Sheryl is survived by her husband David, of 59 years of Cedar Falls; three children, Aimee (Dan) Thode of Urbandale, Aaron (Carey) Bewyer of Urbandale, and Alissa (John) Scapes of Stoughton, WI; five grandchildren, Lydia (Josiah), Eadie, Jeremy, Julian, and Brendan; one great grandson, Joshua; and one brother, Craig (Melanie) Belden of West Des Moines, IA. Preceded in death by her parents, and her brother Scott Belden. Memorial services will be held in the spring of 2026. In honor of her legacy, please consider a donation to the Western Home Communities’ Dementia Training and Education Fund, or to St. Paul Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls.
