Mark Edward Mershon

Mark Edward Mershon, 68, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, died unexpectedly Wednesday, October 6, 2021 at MercyOne-Cedar Falls (Sartori Memorial Hospital) after a brief illness. He was born October 17, 1952 in Cedar Falls, the son of Robert D. and Nancy J. (Fausch) Mershon. In 1977, he married Anne Spinelli, and they later divorced. After graduating from Cedar Falls High School in 1971, Mark completed his BA degree from Arizona State University in Tempe, AZ, where he began his life-long association with the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He obtained his JD law degree from St. Mary’s School of Law in San Antonio, TX, and joined his father’s law practice in 1980. He continued to practice law at Mershon Law Firm with his daughter Jennifer assisting him for the past 18 years. Mark felt privileged to participate in many organizations throughout his life, including membership and leadership positions with Beaver Hills Country Club (past President), Nazareth Lutheran Church, University of Northern Iowa Kappa Sigma Mu-Upsilon Chapter (Alumni and housing corporation advisor), Iowa State Bar Association, Black Hawk County Bar Association, Cedar Falls Jaycees, Lions Club, Elks Club, Cedar Falls Community Credit Union (Board member), and United Way Foundation. His passion from an early age was golf. He treasured close friendships both in Cedar Falls and Tempe, where he traveled regularly and could play golf year-round. He also owned several rental properties where there was always something that needed mowing or fixing. Mark is survived by a daughter, Jennifer (Chuck) Hoop of Cedar Falls; a son, John of Arizona; a granddaughter, Sofia, and a grandson, Jimmy of Cedar Falls; a brother, Craig, of Arizona; and a sister, Lynn, of Cedar Falls. He is preceded in death by his parents, Bob and Nancy. In accordance with Mark’s wishes, there will be no formal services. A private celebration of life and inurnment will take place at a later date.
