Audrey Marshall Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Audrey Marshall was born in Oelwein, Iowa on July 20, 1903 to William A. and Clara E. Reh Reed. On her fourth birthday, the family moved to Waterloo where her father was the editor and co-owner of the Waterloo Morning Tribune. The newspaper spawned the radio station WMT, which was housed in the Tribune building located at 405 Lafayette Street and later moved to Cedar Rapids. Audrey attended Emerson Grade School and graduated fro West Waterloo High School in 1921, a member of the last class to graduate for the Sloan Wallace site. In 1925, she graduated from Northwestern University, Evanston, IL, and then taught English at Taber College in Taber, IA. On January 3, 1928, she married Edgar B. Marshall. They lived in Chicago and Joliet, IL for the next 27 years. While living in Joliet, Audrey was active in Christ Episcopal Church, singing in the choir every Sunday, and participating in various church activities. She was involved in Red Cross work during WWII, and received many citations for her participation. She was active in P.T.A. and was a Girl Scout Troup leader for many years. Her love of reading inspired her to become a Librarian at the Joliet Public Library, a career she would continue when she and her husband moved to Iowa in 1955. They first moved to a farm outside of Jesup, and later moved to Cedar Falls. She served as a Children's Librarian for ten years at the Cedar Falls Public Library. In later years, Audrey lived in Eichhorn Haus in Waverly, and for eleven years at the Western Home in Cedar Falls. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Grace in infancy and, Helen Reh Reed, and her husband. Audrey is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Drs. Judith and Melville Finkelstein; sister-in-law, Helen Alcorn, and four grandchildren and their families. They are, James and Carol Brewer and their children Greg and Janelle of Wheeling, IL; Blair and Kristin Brewer and their daughter Gabrielle of Ames; Mark Finkelstein of Des Moines; Ann and Darrel Van Buren and children Lara and Matt Stapelton, and John and Salina Van Buren and their daughter Hailey Rae of Nampa, ID and California. Cousins in California, New York, Minnesota and Scotland also survive her. Her long life was devoted to her family, friends, and learning. Mentally alert up to the day she died, Wednesday, April 30, 2003, at Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls, she was an inspiration to all who knew her.
