Robert Canney

Robert John (Bob) Canney, 84, of Cedar Falls, IA, passed away on Monday, February 23, 2026, at NorthCrest Specialty Care in Waterloo, Iowa. Bob was born on August 10, 1941, in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of Doris Marie (Stebbins) and Marvin John Canney. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Elkhart, Iowa. Bob attended Maxwell High School and graduated in 1959. He served in the United States Army Reserve from December 1959 until his honorable discharge in May 1967. On December 2, 1961, Bob was united in marriage to Martha Louise Carlson at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Elkhart. To this union, two children were born, David John and Julia Marie. Bob operated the Sinclair Station in Mingo, Iowa, and continued his education at ECI and Drake University in Des Moines. He moved the family to Janesville, Iowa in 1980 and began work as the Director of IT at the Black Hawk County Courthouse, retiring in January 2005. He stayed active as Court Attendant until December 2007. Bob enjoyed hunting, fishing, and serving his community. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Waterloo, the Mingo Men’s Club, and Government Management Information Systems (GMIS). He also served on the Board of Education in Mingo, Iowa, and the Village Co Operative Board in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Bob especially loved spending time with his family and he was always ready for good conversation or a game of cards. Bob’s memory is honored by his wife of 64 years, Martha Canney of Cedar Falls; son, David (Cyndi) Canney of Waverly; daughter, Julie (Dwight) Sorensen of Cedar Falls; five grandchildren, Isabella Canney of Waverly, Blake (Aimee) Sorensen of Denver, Brandon (Kelsey) Sorensen of Iowa City, Brock (Lindsey) Sorensen of West Union, and Brenna (Andrew) Busch of Tripoli; six great grandchildren, Ryker, Saylor, and Walker Sorensen, Sienna and Porter Sorensen, and Adalyn Busch; sister, Charlotte (Dave) McHone of Ankeny; sisters-in-law, Margaret Leonard of Georgetown, TX and Marie Huggins of Maxwell; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister and brother-in-law, Donna (Gary) Smith; sister-in-law and brothers-in-law, Marilyn (Gene) Leonard, Norman Leonard, and Lowell Huggins; and nephew, Tim Smith. Visitation will be on Thursday, February 26, 2026, from 4-6pm at Richardson Funeral Home in Cedar Falls with a rosary at 3:45. Funeral services will be on Friday, February 27, 2026, at 10:30am at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Waterloo with Father Anthony Kruse officiating. Burial will follow at 3:00 p.m. in Holy Cross Cemetery in Elkhart with military rites provided by the American Legion Post #249 Honor Guard from Maxwell. Memorials may be directed to the family for a later designation.
